Voyager 1 and 2 were sent to the outer solar system in the 1977s. They flew by Jupiter, Saturn,Uranus and Neptune. Titan is a planet-sized moon of Saturn. It has a thick nitrogen atmosphere. Photochemistry converts some of the atmospheric methane and ethene into liquid form which is thought to form lakes or oceans on the surface. The chemistry of Titan is like Earth's before life evolved.

Launched in 1962, its mission was a practice run to land on the moon and to take the first pictures of the moon unfortunately it crashed there.

The observatory contained four main telescopes on one spacecraft. It was launched in 1991 was used to detect pulsars and supernovae

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a beach ball, 22.8 inches in diameter, weighed only 183.9 pounds, and took about 98 minutes to orbit Earth on its elliptical path. It began the space race

James Webb Space Telescope is the largest telescope ever built. It will be able to see the farthest of any telescope built so far. It will be possible to study distant worlds and map the universe’s earliest structures

Launched on August 27, 1962, Mariner 2 was the first spacecraft to visit Venus. Closest approach to Venus, 34,773 km, occurred on December 14, 1962. It was the first spacecraft to fly by another planet. Its mission was to take temperature measurements of the planet and to measure interplanetary magnetic field and/or particle measurements

First flyby of Mercury and the last Mariner probe launched in 1973. It flew by Venus using the planet’s gravity to accelerate onto Mercury. It was also the first spacecraft to encounter two planets at close range and for 33 years the only spacecraft to photograph Mercury up close. It is still in orbit around the sun.

Venus Express (VEX) was the first Venus exploration mission of the European Space Agency (ESA). Launched in November 2005, it arrived at Venus in April 2006 and began continuously sending back science data from its polar orbit around Venus. The observation over such long periods of time had never been done in previous missions to Venus and was key to a better understanding of the atmosphere.

Pioneer 10, launched in 1972, headed to the more distant parts of the solar system. It was one of the only nuclear powered spacecraft. It carried a gold plated plaque like Voyager. As it traveled, it was the fastest object to leave the earth at the time, reaching Mars in only 12 weeks. Part of its mission was to take pictures of zodiacal light. This is light from the sun reflected off of tiny dust particles. NASA kept contact until 2002. A spacecraft that was supposed to last twenty one months lasted three decades. It continues its journey as a ghost ship and will reach the star Aldebaran in two 2 million years.

The spacecraft Cassini built by NASA’s JPL lab encountered Enceladus, a small moon of Saturn in 2005. It took images of geyser-like jets that are spewing water vapor and ice from an underground ocean.

This painting is a mirror anamorphic image. Anamorphs are stretched images that correct themselves in a reflective surface. As you walk around the image it looks abstract. Look on the side of the metal tube and it corrects the image. You can see an image of a woman and 3 embryos.

The idea came to me that there is a duality in the woman’s body and the embryo. The antiabortion movement uses the image of the fetus without the context of the woman’s body and I wanted to complicate that. When viewed in the steel viewing device(science) the bodies separate and become distinct. However, for the correct image to be maintained the viewer has to hold a very specific viewpoint. The image of the woman's body is taken from a diagram on methods of using an ultrasound. It shows the size of embryos at 3 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks of development. When the image is viewed from one angle the two images are merged. When they are seen from a certain perspective and reflected they are separated.

The image of the woman's body is in the same space as that of the embryo. When viewed in the steel viewing device(science) the bodies separate and become distinct. 1997, room size installation, painting telescope mirror

This is a room size installation in which the viewer enters a room in front of a painting of the uterine wall magnified to the scale that the viewer would be the size of a human egg. As the viewer walks in front of the painting an image of the viewer is projected via telescope mirror onto a screen. The screen is a second painting containing a catalog of embryology from the 12th century until the present. The viewer becomes one image in the catalog of embryos.

A painting on the wall of an optical illusion. The red dot appears larger than the pink dot however they are the same size. Beakers on the wall have labels that describe the idea of the homunculus and history of cell theory.This installation appeared at L.A.C.E. (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) in the Issue of Choice exhibition, July 7, 1992 - August 8, 1992

A wall is placed at the entrance of the gallery with a 4"x4" viewing hole. Looking through this view finder, the viewer sees the first image. As the viewer walks around the wall the image breaks down and is seen to be on three separate panels. The boy is on the smallest panel 1 1/2'x4'), the man is on the second panel (2' x 5' and the woman on the last panel is larger than life size (3' x6'). On the reverse of the triangular shaped panels are three texts about the intrusion of the state on the boundaries of woman's body.

Sight Unseen is an installation  done in collaboration with Leslie Ernst. Inside the gallery are four small exam rooms with curtains with images  and medical equipment with text and images about HIV/AIDS and women.

Articulation of the Limbs – A series of paintings based on the receptors in the body which orient the body in space.1994,18"x24", oil on panel

A banner on the outside of a building at SIde Street Projects shows an anamorphed image of a perceptual psychology experiment. In the image a subject wears inversion glasses which flip the view of the world upside down. the subject is balanced on a springboard. The image appears upside down until viewed in a surveillnace mirror mounted near the ground.

The mural on the wall is perspective drawing of a man standing in position to view an object projected on a plane on the other wall is a drawing of a cross section of a vagina with a speculum inserted. The image is anamorphed along the wall so that it is viewed correctly in the surveillance mirror.

Th is mural was created for the exhibition "Addressing Herself" at the Lab In San Francisco in 1994.

This installation was part of a site specific show at Angel's Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro( Angel's Gate was a military base during WWII. I utilized two small chambers within the gallery to create a camera obscura. As you enter the first chamber there is a blank screen. As the door closes and the room darkens, an image of the barracks outside appears on the screen. The door between the two rooms contains a peep hole through which an image of a woman sleeping appears.When the second chamber is entered the image of the woman reveals itself to be a part of a larger drawing of a medical technique called laparoscopy, where a small hole is cut into the abdominal cavity to allow a view inside the body. Adjacent to the drawing is a text about the custody case in which a judge ruled that seven frozen embryos were persons.

The installation utilizes the storefront window space of the gallery with vinyl text on the windows and a backdrop of fabric printed with photograph.

Franklin Furnance installation

Inside of the gallery there are four small "exam rooms" were created with curtains which images printed on them with liquid light.

The first room contains thermometer bottles with labels that are statistics on the extent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The third room contains a medical illustration poster of the invisible woman tracing the history of viewing devices used to look at women's bodies as reproducers.

The last room contains a stereoscope used by the Navy to test depth perception in WWII. Replacing the normal eye chart cards are cards that outline the lack of testing of new drugs for HIV/AIDS on women
